Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management (EPPM) has roles that are specific trade skills and role teams that are trade skills organized in crews.
Primavera P6 EPPM roles come in handy in scheduling when the project manager knows that task and required trade skill to complete the task, but not the actual person doing the work. In the planning stage of a schedule the project manager typically does not want to worry about the actual resource performing the work. At this stage of planning it is best to insert a trade skill or role placeholder until later when a person is assigned to the task.
In a typical scenario, the project manager assigns roles and the line manager later assigns the actual resource. Primavera P6 EPPM supports roles and role teams. P6 EPPM role teams organize trade skills into crews for efficient assignment of roles to a schedule.
This article demonstrates role and role team features in Primavera P6 EPPM.
We begin in the resources tab, administration page, and roles option, Figure 1.
Figure 1
In our demonstration we add a construction trades and management sibling role to the surveyor, Figure 2.
Figure 2
We specify the details for a common laborer, Figure 3.
Figure 3
We give the common laborer a standard pay rate of 65$/h, Figure 3. We have four common laborers available so the max units/time is 32h/d, which is four common laborers working 8 hour days, Figure 4.
Figure 4
We continue and define roles for a pipe fitter and pipe fitter apprentice, Figure 5.
Figure 5
The pipe fitter, pipe fitter apprentice, and common laborer are going to make up our pipe crew role team. We proceed and choose the role teams option and click to add a new role team, which we name piping crew, Figure 6.
Figure 6
Proceeding we assign the pipe fitter, pipe fitter apprentice, and common laborer to the piping crew, Figure 7.
Figure 7
We have our piping crew fully defined in Figure 8.
Figure 8
Now we assign our piping crew to an activity to demonstrate how the role teams feature helps organize our trade skills by team effort. We select the projects tab, activities page, and install piping activity, Figure 9.
Figure 9
From the assign drop down menu we choose role, Figure 9. Then in the select role dialog we select to view roles by role team, and we choose all the children of piping crew, Figure 10.
Figure 10
In Figure 11 we have our Install Piping activity and our piping crew role assignments.
Figure 11
In Figure 12 we have resources assigned to the pipe fitter role and pipe fitter apprentice roles, and we are in the process of assigning the common laborer role a resource.

Summary
Primavera P6 EPPM roles and role teams increase the efficiency of the labor assignment process. Roles keep the project manager from becoming bogged down in the details of labor assignments. Roles are trade skills and placeholders until the line manager assigns a resource to the effort.
Role teams further expedite the labor assignment process by grouping together roles working on a specific combined effort. After assignment of a role team the line manager assigns resources to each member of the specified crew.
