If you are collaborating with other stakeholders using Primavera P6, you may want to display the Primavera P6 line numbers on the schedule layout for easy reference.
Large projects, particularly, would benefit from line numbers to make for easy reference of Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) elements and activities. A layout including line numbering would also help support an effort to compare versions and updates of the schedule. Line numbers are particularly helpful if WBS element and/or activity IDs are long and complex.
This article demonstrates a quick tip on how to display line numbering in Primavera P6 Professional.
We have in Figure 1 our demonstration project.
Figure 1
We want to insert a line numbering column to make for more effective referencing of WBS elements and activities. To include the line numbering feature in the layout tool group click the down arrow on the far right of the layout tool group, Figure 2.
Figure 2
Click on the popup add or remove buttons drop down menu and a list of all available layout tool group features appears, Figure 3.
Figure 3
Check the # Line Numbers option, again, Figure 3. Now our schedule with line numbers column on the far left of the layout is displayed in Figure 4.

Summary
Primavera P6 Professional’s activity naming convention includes an Activity ID prefix, suffix, and increment. WBS elements have unique codes. Inserting a Primavera P6 line numbers column helps better reference a schedules WBS elements and/or activities. Primavera P6 line numbers are also very helpful for comparing different versions of the same schedule. If you reference the same activity between versions the line numbers should match. If not, you most likely need to inspect the schedule versions for additional differences.
