Givaudan is an international company that specializes in producing flavors and fragrances wisely used by the food and beverage industry, among others. Givaudan is on a mission to create pleasure and celebration from the flavors and fragrances that they identify, develop and perfect. As a multinational company they employ over 10,000 people.
Challenge
Givaudan had been using Oracle Primavera P6 version 5 since 2005 which was no longer officially supported by Oracle. As long-time Primavera P6 users with approximately 150 users worldwide and several hundred projects being managed at any one time, they wanted to upgrade to Primavera P6 EPPM version 8.1. The web technologies employed in Primavera P6 version 8.1 were new to the organization and so Givaudan asked Ten Six to support this major upgrade.
Ten Six Approach
Ten Six laid out a high-level implementation plan which included several Ten Six team members performing different roles and included the following steps:
- Educate Givaudan of the new capabilities and modules in Primavera P6 EPPM R8.1.
- Sizing of hardware and environment.
- Remote installation of Primavera P6 R8.1 in a test environment.
- Data migration.
- Conduct Primavera P6 EPPM custom training based on role and use cases.
- Deliver BI Publisher training.
- Revise existing Primavera P6 configuration to take advantage of new capabilities.
- Provide assistance in converting ~50 existing custom Reports to v8.1 using BI Publisher.
- Develop step by step role based desktop and procedure guides.
- Debrief and level set for go-live planning and implementation.
- Provide ongoing technical and user support.
One technical goal was to ensure that Givaudan IT staff were self-sufficient after Ten Six left. As a result, the installation process was thoroughly documented taking into account the unique nature of Givaudan’s environment. This included creating a detailed step-by-step guide on how to reinstall Primavera P6 EPPM and move from a test environment to a production one.
The Primavera P6 EPPM training included overviews of the new capabilities in Primavera P6 EPPM, detailed role-based end-user training and BI Publisher training. Due to the international audience, the end user training was scheduled during the mornings with administrative and management training held during the afternoons.
The BI Publisher training was held with power users and Givaudan’s IT teams and included using three existing reports as practical exercises during the class.
The Desktop user guide documentation delivered by the Ten Six team included step-by-step role-based Primavera P6 EPPM User Guides – including managers, lead scientists, time entry users and functional managers guides.

Progress Reporter’s Guide
Validation of Givaudan’s existing documentation revealed that some of the screen shots needed to be updated to match Primavera P6 EPPM R8.1. Functionally the existing document required no changes in its description of process steps.
Results
A successful migration upgrading Givaudan from Primavera P6 version 5 to P6 EPPM R8.1. All users are very happy with the new capabilities an how the training approach was focused by role and optimized to reduce time out of office.
Finally, for a period after the Ten Six team left, we provided ad hoc remote support for all roles within Givaudan.
We are happy to report that Givaudan’s upgrade to Primavera P6 EPPM from version 5 was a smooth process and major success!
