Opening and Closing Projects in Primavera P6 EPPM
Primavera P6 EPPM users can open more than one project at one time. Multiple users often the project team, can edit the same project at the same time if the user preferences or permissions are set to allow this practice. However, projects cannot be edited unless they are open. When a project is closed users can still look at the summary data.
In this article, we explain where the summary data is stored, when a project is closed, how to open a project from a portlet on the dashboard and how to open and close multiple projects in the Enterprise Project Structure (EPS).
When a project is open for editing in Primavera P6 EPPM, data is displayed from the ‘Project Detail Data’ table, as displayed in Figure 1.

When a project is closed vast amounts of summary data can still be viewed by users in Primavera P6 EPPM. Data is taken from the ‘Summary Data’ and displayed in the Enterprise Project Structure. Before a user opens a project to edit it, they can view data and determine whether the edits are still required or whether another member of the project team, with permissions, has already done the work.

Summary
When a project team collaborates sometimes tasks can cross over and two members of the same team can be allocated similar work. When a project is closed, users can still view summary project data. This can help determine whether a project needs to be opened or whether the work allocated to the user has already been completed by another member of the project team.
Projects can be opened directly from the Project portlet on the dashboard or through the Enterprise Project Page. Multiple projects can be open at once which is helpful if a user wants to cross-reference an item over several projects.
Similarly, Primavera P6 EPPM offers the user the option to individually close a list of open projects or multiple projects at the same time.
