You may want to provide specific details about a deliverable in your schedule. This is possible using WBS notebook topic assignments in Primavera P6 Professional.
Similar to a statement of work (SOW) the schedule may provide details or specifications of project related products or deliverables. The outstanding question is how can these specifications be included in the project schedule? Specifications can be defined in Primavera P6 Professional using notebook topics. Then it becomes a matter of assigning these notebook topics to the schedule.
We demonstrate how to assign notebook topics to activities in the blog Primavera P6 Notebook Topics Explained.
It is also possible to assign notebook topics to Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) elements or your deliverables. Let us now demonstrate.
This article demonstrates how to assign WBS notebook topics to elements in the P6 schedule.
In Figure 1 we have our demonstration project.
Figure 1
This is a piping repair and improvement project. We want to provide specifications for the piping. Again, this can be done using notebook topics in Primavera P6 Professional. To get to notebook topics we choose Admin | Admin Categories, Figure 2.
Figure 2
In the Admin Categories dialog, we find a suitable WBS Description notebook topic for our deliverables, Figure 3.
Figure 3
Observe that this notebook topic is active for WBS elements only. We want to use this WBS Description notebook topic for our deliverables. In Figure 4 we display our WBS.
Figure 4
We select the Piping deliverable and in the bottom details choose Notebook, + Add, and assign WBS Description to the Piping deliverable, Figure 5.
Figure 5
We then elect to modify the notebook topic and insert the following pipe specification, Figure 6.
Figure 6
Now we are ready to assign our WBS Description notebook topic. In the Bars dialog we select WBS Elements below Project, Bar Labels, and delete the Left Start label and Right Finish label, Figure 7.
Figure 7
We then add a WBS Name label on the left and Notebook – WBS Description on the right, Figure 8.
Figure 8
Our final WBS with piping specification is displayed in Figure 9.

Summary
Again, like SOWs schedules can provide project related product specifications. In Primavera P6 Professional deliverable specifications can be written for WBS Description notebook topics. Schedulers can then assign these WBS Description notebook topics as labels for deliverables in the WBS. By using WBS notebook topic assignments in P6, deliverable details may be specified directly on the project schedule’s WBS.
