Resource codes in Primavera P6 Professional give you the option to group and sort within Resource Assignments. They can help you organize, group, sort, and filter data. You can set up roles with specific skill sets, which can be used as resource assignments. You can also assign costs per unit for all these resources, which will help you in planning costs by resource and role.
Resources are meant to be ‘permanent’ databases which can be large and cumbersome to sort through; however, resource codes in Primavera P6 make it possible to sort your resources by a specific category.
So how is this possible? Let’s take a closer look.
In our ‘Pipe Repair-10’ example project below, we will create our subcontractor resource codes and then assign them to our resource database.
First, we select Enterprise and Resource Codes as below.
In the Resource Codes dialog we click modify as below.
And in the Resource Code definitions dialog we select Contractor +Add as shown below.
We type in the name ‘Subcontractor’ in the ‘Resource Code Name’ and change the maximum length to 14. We close the Resource Code Definitions and return to Resource Codes dialog, as below.
We select Subcontractor and +Add, and then we can enter all of our subcontractor resource codes.
Now that we have generated all our resource codes we need to assign them to their respective resources in our ‘Pipe Repair-10’ project resource database below.
By entering ‘Columns’, we can select ‘Resource Codes’ and by clicking on our ‘Subcontractor’ resource code, we can see the additional column for Subcontractor in our ‘Pipe Repair-10’ project resource database.
Next, we select ‘Assign Resource Codes’ and under the ‘Subcontractor Resource Code: Subcontractor’ we select ‘TOTAL QUALITY’.
Next, we highlight the Project Manager and all the other resources listed in the ‘PIPE REPAIR’ category.
And by right-clicking, we select ‘Fill Down’ from the dialog menu and all our ‘PIPE REPAIR’ resources are assigned the ‘TOTAL QUALITY’ resource code. We continue to edit and allocate resource codes, and populate the Subcontractor Column.
By double-clicking on an individual resource in the Subcontractor column, a dialog box appears where we can update the type of resource for our subcontractor. We assign each of our pipe repair resources their particular Subcontractor, as displayed below.
And, by going into ‘Group and Sort’ as below…
And then by selecting Subcontractor, we click OK and our ‘PIPE REPAIR-10’ project resource database is displayed below.
Summary
Resource codes in Primavera P6 are helpful when organizing and sorting through what can be a large resource database. Once the resource codes are created and assigned, Primavera P6 Professional will support the grouping, sorting and filtering of the resource by the respective resource code. This helps to navigate a large resource database and make it more manageable, as well as speed up workflow.
