There is usually more than one way to do just about everything in Primavera P6 Professional. One person responding to our blog How to Remove All Relationships in Primavera P6 commented “There’s a cool way to do it J”. It’s an interactive way that removes all activity relationships directly on the network diagram. And it supports the effort to generate a template as a base schedule for a new and similar project schedule.
Remove All Activity Relationships In P6
This article looks at how to interactively remove all activity relationships from a Primavera P6 Professional schedule using the network diagram. Yes, in other words, it shows a cool way to remove all activity relationships from the schedule, and shows another way of doing this over our previous blog.
Whenever a new blog is posted we quite often receive comments from fellow Primavera P6 users. And our blog on How to Remove All Relationships in Primavera P6 is no exception. One commenter thought this blog “misleading” because it did not “address how to do this within a project”. Another commenter thought we would lose our layouts in our process of removing activities, which, we disagree with. Well, there’s a cool way of removing activity relationships that definitely assuages both concerns. The cool way is done within a project and, therefore, does not affect the layouts and filters; no questions asked.
We have in Figure 1 our demonstration project.
Figure 1
We want to use this schedule for a similar and new project and would, therefore, like to remove all the activity relationships to simplify the schedule. And provide a good starting point for scheduling our new project. This can be done interactively on the activity network. We first select the activity network icon in the top layout tool group, Figure 2.
Figure 2
Our schedule then displays in the activity network view, Figure 3.
Figure 3
Now for the interactive part. Select the first relationship arrow in the schedule, which would be in the top left corner of the activity network, Figure 4.
Figure 4
Note the color of the selected relationship arrow turns blue, again, Figure 4. Next hold down the control key and place a window around the entire activity network, Figure 5.
Figure 5
All relationship arrows in the activity network turn blue, Figure 6.
Figure 6
Right click and select delete from the popup menu, Figure 7.
Figure 7
Figure 8 displays a network diagram of our demonstration project schedule with all the activity relationships deleted.
Figure 8
Figure 9 displays the Gantt chart of our updated schedule.
Figure 9
We recalculate the schedule to achieve the schedule displayed in Figure 10, which, again, has no activity relationships, and also all relationships are lined up on the data date.
Figure 10
That’s it! This adjusted schedule provides a good starting point for creating a new but comparable schedule.
Summary
For those who prefer a more interactive approach, it is possible in Primavera P6 Professional to remove all activity relationships in a schedule by directly interacting with the activity network diagram. This way of removing activity relationships is actually quite efficient. And it is done inside the schedule, so there is no question of impact on layouts or filters. Well, for a more traditional way of removing activity relationships within a schedule, read the following blog Removing Relationships from Multiple Activities in Primavera P6.
