The Primavera P6 resource codes are helpful for sorting resource databases, which can become cluttered with an abundance of resource definitions.
Once created and assigned resources become an important fixture in the scheduling historical record. Resources are meant to be permanent database elements, and resource databases are therefore, generally, large and difficult to sort through. P6 resource codes, however, make it possible to sort resources by your desired category.
This article demonstrates how to employ P6 resource codes to sort a Primavera P6 Professional resource database.
We first begin by creating subcontractor resource codes and then assign them to our resource database pipe & repair project resources. Proceed and select enterprise | resource codes…, Figure 1.
Figure 1
In the resource codes dialog click modify, Figure 2.
Figure 2
In the resource code definitions dialog, Figure 3, select + Add.
Figure 3
Type in the name subcontractor and set the resource code maximum length to 14, Figure 4.
Figure 4
Close the resource code definitions dialog. Back in the resource codes dialog select + Add, Figure 5.
Figure 5
In Figure 6 we have entered all our desired subcontractor resource codes.
Figure 6
Now that our resource codes are generated we want to assign them to respective resources in our resource database, Figure 7.
Figure 7
In the columns dialog, Figure 8, we dive into the resource codes category and select subcontractor.
Figure 8
Use the single arrow to select the subcontractor resource code. Our database and subcontractor resource code is displayed in Figure 9.
Figure 9
Note the column for subcontractor. Select the project manager resource and in the bottom details codes tab click assign, again, Figure 9. In the assign resource codes dialog, Figure 10, select the Total Quality resource code.
Figure 10
Now highlight the project manager resource and all other resources listed in the pipe repair category, Figure 11.
Figure 11
Right click and select fill down from the popup menu, again, Figure 11. Now all pipe repair resources are assigned the resource code Total Quality, Figure 12.
Figure 12
Continue and edit respective resource definitions to populate the subcontractor column, as per Figure 13.
Figure 13
When you double click on an individual resource in the subcontractor column a select subcontractor dialog appears where you can update the desired resource subcontractor. After assigning each of our pipe repair resources their particular subcontractor let’s continue and group resources by subcontractor, Figure 14.
Figure 14
Now all our pipe repair project resources are conveniently grouped by subcontractor in our resource database, Figure 15.
Figure 15
And we now have some order to what often appears to be chaos.
Summary
Resource codes help to organize and sort the resource database, accordingly. The Primavera P6 Professional resource codes feature is robust, and supportive of a seemingly limitless possibility of resource code definitions. After creation and assignment of resource codes it is possible to group the resource database by the respective resource code, which helps bring order to, most likely, a cluttered resource database.
