Or to put it another way – Assignment Dialogs will not appear in Primavera P6 Professional
I recently encountered the strangest situation with Primavera P6 professional. When I clicked on the assignment button for resources, predecessors, or successors, the assignment dialogs were failing to appear on screen.
Entirely by coincidence, one of my customers called me experiencing an identical problem. To give you a detailed description of the symptoms: whenever you click on the resource assignments button or you try and open the assignments dialogs for predecessors and successors, Primavera P6 simply flashes in response to the click, but displays no dialog.
Interestingly I noticed that if I logged into a different database on the same client, the symptoms were not present when connected to this other databases. But when I logged back in to the original database, the problem reappeared. Rather confounding what? This made me wonder if I had some kind of database corruption. Both my customer and I started to explore the problem and attempt to come up with a solution. I’m happy to report that my customer beat me to the answer. I would like to now share that solution with you.
And the solution…
If you experience this condition, it is almost certain that you are running on a multiscreen set up. It is also likely that the symptoms first appeared when you changed the monitor you use for your main display. Does this sound familiar?
Primavera P6 does store certain geographical information concerning the way you are displaying P6 in your computer window. Some of this information gets stored in the P6 database. Unfortunately this works against us if we change the main display screen in our Windows environment. Primavera gets confused about where to display certain pop-up dialogs such as the assignment dialogs.
So if your assignment dialogs dialog boxes have gone our MIA, switch your main display nine, use your Windows screen resolution settings to switch back to your original main display. This will bring back your assignment dialog boxes.
If you found this article helpful, then you can thank Jake from Maryland. It was he who discovered that changing your main display can make your dialog boxes go MIA.
Thanks Jake. Nicely done Sir.
As a conclusion, I wouldn’t say that this was necessarily a defect in the Primavera Pr6Professional software, it’s like a missing interaction between it and the Windows operating system.
