What gives? My Users… menu item is missing in action in Primavera P6 Professional. Also, my Security Profiles item too.
When you’re using one of the later versions or Primavera P6 Professional, like R8.4 or later, you may have noticed that the Users… menu item has vanished from the Admin menu. So what’s up with that, you may ask.
No this isn’t Oracle Primavera axing functionality. It is in fact very logical if you are using a standalone database that happens to be an SQLite database.
With the release of Primavera P6 R8.4, Oracle did a super smart thing that has been proving very popular. They abandoned their own Oracle Express tool as the standalone database of choice and replaced it with a SQLite database instead. Overnight this move caused the support phones to fall almost silent. At least on the subject of installation and connectivity issues. We at Ten Six have had almost zero support calls for standalone installation help since Primavera dumped Oracle Express from the equation.
But what does all this have to do with the disappearance of the Users… menu item, and indeed the Security Profiles… menu item from the Admin menu? The answer is simple; the SQLite database is a true single user database. You can only have one client logged into it. And only then, on the one machine that Primavera P6 and SQLite are installed on. There’s no shared access with SQLite.
If you look in your Document folder after installing a SQLite standalone, you’ll find a file in there called PPMDBSQLite.db. That is the database Primavera P6 is using. And so, if you are using a standalone version of Primavera P6, there’s little point in being able to create multiple users. Only you, can ever login to it. Hence Primavera simply chopped both Users and Security Profiles out of the Admin menu. Makes sense once you know – doesn’t it?
So there you have it. If your Users… menu item option is missing, you are undoubtedly logged in to an SQLite standalone database.
